A Study of Cases of 316 Peptic Ulcer

Abstract
The present report is a study of 316 cases of peptic ulcer who were treated by surgical procedures from Nov. 1958 to Sept. 1963. The follow up series were 232 cases in a period of one month to 43 years.
Total 316 cases, except 43 cases who needed emergent operation, were selected from applied numbers from all over the Korea. 95% of the cases belong to low socio-economical group, N.M.C. being a charity hospital. The ratio of gastric and duodenal ulcer was 1.4 to 1. The average age for the onset of symptoms in male was 31.1 years and female, 32 years. The average age of onset symptoms in duodenal ulcer was 29.2 years, while in western material, it was 33 years. Also the average age of onset in gastric ulcer was 32.9 years, while it was 41 years in western material. Among 297 cases who had subtotal gastric resection the mortality was 1.4%, 4(cases). The late results of the material were classified according to patient¢¥s subjective opinion into four categories : 99 cases (94.3%) have satisfactory results, and the rest, 6 cases have unsatisfactory results. 39 caaes (13.1%) of 297 cases had dumping syndrome, which is about the same as in western material.
The post-operative weight change after gastric resection 36 (31.6%) have gained weight a little increased than reported in western materials.
In the majority of our cases more than two third of stomach has been resected. The follow up time is in average over 2 years in 45 cases (15.1%). No recurrence has been found in our material.
